Posio
Posio village crest.
The Loukusa family farm.
We learned that Karvonens have been living in Posio since sometime in the 1690's. Church records were taken very seriously, whenever there was a marriage, birth, death, or if someone moved, it was recorded.

Kelli, the Karvonen family farm.

We hiked up a Riisitunturi (tunturi literally translates to "mountain in Lapland" but are also known as fells/ fjalls).
We roasted makkara and bacon for breakfast in this little cabin.
We had the chance to get a tour of this old house that was made into a museum.
Various buckets for making foods, carrying and storing water and milk.
A baby bath.
Here is ruisleipä hanging to dry, on the far end is a little different kind of bread. At times when food was scarce, some people had to literally make bread out of sawdust. They would grind pieces of wood into a flour.

Our last stop of the day was at Kelli, where we were able to go inside and look around a little.

This big living space here is called the "pirtti" where there is a stove, dining space and living space. I'm sure with the bigger families it was also used for sleep space. During the second world war Kalle and Selma also housed evacuees. It wasn't until some time after the war in 1950's that they moved to North America.
It was such an interesting and neat trip! The Finnish Lapland is really a beautiful place!
